Africa’s protected area (PA) network contain some of the most iconic wilderness areas on the planet, and are home to the world’s most impressive assemblage of large mammals. PAs form the cornerstone of efforts to conserve lions and many other species. For instance, a significant portion of lion range (approximately 460,000 square miles) falls within protected areas; it is because of PAs that the remaining lion populations, which number between 20,000-25,000 individuals, are able to thrive.
