I ordered this USB sound card as a replacement for a faulty sound card on my laptop PC which had left me with no sound from the internal speakers and no microphone input. I didn't expect much given the other reviews, but have been very impressed with the device. Since I have only just received the unit I can't comment on it's longevity, but device looks robust enough to last enough if handled with reasonable care. The first point to clear up in response to reviews saying that there is no 7.1 sound or that the left and right speakers are reversed, is that YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE AND DRIVERS to enable the 7.1 functionality. The Xear 3D software provides lots of effects functions as well as providing the option to swap left and right channels. So to be clear, the device does not come with a CD containing any software.

The unit will download the generic drivers it needs to operate when you first plug it in, but the associated Cmedia / Xear3D device management software that provides control over the 7.1 effects etc. Needs to be separately downloaded and installed.

I use DriverGenius software to automatically detect new drivers and download them but you should also be able to find it by searching for Cmedia CM108 drivers and/or Xear 3D. I suspect this device is being sold cheaply because it doesn't have the software bundled with it, but once you have tracked down and installed the software it is excellent! Hope this helps! For £2.49 this product is, quite simply put, amazing. I needed it on Ubunutu (12.04) for use with my headset primarily for skype which I use regularly for business. I simply plugged it in and configured using Ubuntu's built in pulse audio volume control (which allows you to map input and output sound devices to installed software) and off I went. With regard to the overall sound quality one has to remember that it is cheaper that some boxes of breakfast cereal, but saying that I would say it is very balanced - a bit light on bass but I am sure if I tried I could improve that.

It's quite bulky so it blocked both USB ports at once, but now with a USB extension cable from a rear USB port I can leave both front ports free, and also this means it's resting on the table not hanging out of the socket so no problems with connections coming loose. (If you think it isn't working make sure the device is right in the USB socket, at which point the green light will come on and the driver should install; if it does this but there's no sound make sure the headphones are pushed right into the socket on the device. All easier with it resting on the desk than sticking out of the front of the computer.). Its function is great.

After plugging it in your headphone or mic will be available in the sound settings as generic microphone and generic speakers. They both work great and the microphone itself has AGC available as a checkbox which wasn't available for the mic on its own. I do have a major complaint though, it fell apart, the shell just came off after regular use, so I taped it back together and it works great still, but the build quality is bad. I did as he suggested, got the C-Media CM-108 Windows 7 Driver v.7.12.8.2144 from x-drivers (there are others for XP and Vista), installed and got access to USB PnP Sound Device settings (this only installs the driver for one usb port, to do the rest plug it into another, find it on the device manager, right click and select update driver and tell it to find it automatically). From there change analog output to headphones, click the hammer next to the option and check the option to swap left and right audio.

You can tweak the virtual 7.1 settings and what the input will be but I found little difference in doing so. I did however change the environment and equalizer to get deeper sounds. Overall, I am very impressed by this product and the case coming of is useful if you have tightly bunched usb ports.

All you need is one driver and it works as a great replacement for broken headphone port. My motherboard's onboard sound failed about 2 1/2 years ago, this is the second USB sound card I've owned (the first being a different manufacturer and model). Plug and play works fine on Win7 64-bit, I've not tried the dedicated drivers as all I need is stereo. The jac is a bit tight, so I was stuck with an annoying hiss for the first few days, until I realised that I needed to give my speaker connector a good shove to get proper contact; since then it's been working well, reliable and with good sound quality. The volume buttons on the unit itself are redundant - with in-application volume control, Windows per-application volume, Windows master volume, and the volume dial on my speakers, I really didn't need yet another volume control.

It's dirt cheap, though, so it's not like they're charging a premium for this questionable design decision. The unit itself is quite bulky and could obstruct adjacent USB ports, if your ports are clustered together too closely.
